Overview


Munnar lies in Idukki district, at the union of three mountain rivers. It is pronounced Moon-aar, which means three rivers in Malayalam. The three rivers; Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala assemble in the center of the town. The place is enclosed by woody hills of the Anamalai Ranges, with the towering volume of Anamudi. Munnar is the most popular spot in Kerala.


The holiday facilities, peaceful environment and the tranquility that it provides make it the perfect serene spot to rejuvenate and revitalize the most jaded of the travelers. It is an excellent base for trekking through the surrounding hills, which are wrapped by lush green rainforests; for going picnicking beside a translucent mountain stream; for Wildlife watching; or for simply getting the kinks out of a tired system.


Among the exotic flora found in the forests and grasslands in Munar is the Neelakurinji. The main cultivation crops in Munnar are Tea and Coffee. The people of Munnar reveal the culture and traditions of both Kerala and their Tamil neighbours from across the border.


Munnar is Kerala's top hill station. The hill station transcends excellence. Munnar is bounded by gently undulating hills swathed in the soothing green of vast tea estates which makes it a perfect tourist destination in south India. Situated at an altitude of 1600 m above sea level, its bracing clim.


Mattupetty is famous for its highly specialized dairy farm, the Indo-Swiss live stock project. Over 100 varieties of high yielding cattle are reared here. Visitors are allowed into three of the eleven cattle sheds at the farm.


The Mattupetty lake and dam, just a short distance from the farm, is a very beautiful picnic spot. The sprawling Kundala tea plantations and the Kundala lake are other attractions in the vicinity. DTPC Idukki provides boating facilities on the Mattupetty Dam. Speed launch and slow speed motorboats are available on hire. Covered with motley of thickets, luscious tea plantations and dotted with cascading waterfalls, Mattupetty commands a spectacular view of Munnar.
